Tiger Trout
Friday, July 24, 2009 at 7:33AM Randy has been trying to get Andy and I over to this sierra lake that has tiger trout in it for some time now. I was very reluctant for two reasons: One I didn't really believe they were there and two I was too cheap to spend the gas money . My confidence was pretty low, but Randy and Andy were pretty excited and they were sure we would catch. When we got to the lake I was impressed with its beauty and fish were rising. My confidence was lifting. I put my float tube in and hooked up instantly. The entire time I was fighting the small fish I was hoping it was a tiger trout. When I got it to the float tube it was a small but beautiful rainbow trout. Nice but, its not a tiger trout. A few moments later I hear Andy calling out he caught a trout he could not identify, it was a tiger trout. Yes they do exist, I was relieved now all I had to do was catch one. Within a couple hours Andy had caught quit a few tigers and Randy and I had just caught rainbows and sucker fish. I was starting to wonder if I was going land one of these small but gorgeous fish. I heard Randy yell and he had now landed his first tiger. A few moments later I had hooked and landed one. Now all three of us had caught tiger trout and we were happy. We continued catching Tigers, Suckers, and Rainbows.
It was an interesting lake to fish, the weeds were extremely thick and any time you saw an opening in the weeds ,the bottom floor of the lake would be baron and have what looked like a sandy bottom. We thought that might indicate springs. If you were there you were guaranteed to catch fish.I parked on one of these holes and caught nine fish on nine casts.. I saw both Randy and Andy pull at least 25 fish from each hole they pulled up to. We used type three lines to get us into the holes and the purple wiggle tail was the hot fly for me. Andy used the sheep creek special. I wasn't sure what Randy used because I didn't want to use a fly that caught so many sucker fish. It was a fun day and the small three and four weight rods made the small but beautiful fish that much more enjoyable.
